about

Notes on this EP:

1. My dad buys me a collection of random books from Oxfam for Christmas, amongst them is Hangover Square by Patrick Hamilton.

2. He says the name caught his eye, (my mum and dad worrying I’m an alcoholic) then when he opened it there was a note inside it from a lady saying she wasn’t sure about it at first, but grew to love it. She highly recommends it.

3. I read it second (after a book on Burke and Hare). Lovely something words are able to do over any other art form. Communication between spirits transversing time. I am in the same place as he.

4. Whilst reading the book I discover the easiest route to Salisbury hill. On the way is the Rondo Theatre. A curious size and I’ve been looking for a venue to put odd nights on. I look into it, they are to put a play on about Patrick Hamilton’s life in May.

5. After finishing the book I create the track Hangover Square in about half an hour using a recording of drum parts I’d played in Glasgow. The vocals are about coincidences (synchronicity) not surprising me anymore because they happen so often. (There seems something in capturing inspiration quickly and keeping all fuck ups in). Gratitude, recognising those moments are enough. Allowing these things to flow seems to bring much more of them.

6. I write the other 2 tracks late January. The 3rd also features drums I recorded in Glasgow. The lyrics are a drunken note I wrote on my phone.

7. Late February and war breaks out. I google Hangover Square Book and see it was written just before world war 2 had broke out. Lines of communication I can’t comprehend.

8. I consider these things Waves from the other side. Simply gestures to the openly inquisitive that the faith required in the unknown within such things is not ridiculous.
